Byron Stripling Provided by Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra
Byron Stripling will trumpet, sing and swing through a musical tribute to
jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway and Fats Waller in The Victory this
weekend.
Stripling, a veteran pops performer and conductor, will take center stage
Saturday and Sunday as vocal and trumpet soloist for "Misbehavin' Tonight," the
Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra's final Pops program of the season.
His program will include "Sweet Georgia Brown," "Hello Dolly," "Mack the
Knife," "Alexander's Ragtime Band" and, of course, "Ain't Misbehavin," Waller's
signature song.
Alfred Savia, the orchestra's music director, will conduct most of the
program, yielding the baton for one number to Dan Carwile.
Stripling, a former lead trumpeter and soloist for the Count Basie Orchestra,
has soloed with major orchestras across the country and has been featured in
telecasts, including PBS' "Evening at the Pops" and the Grammy Awards.
He's also employed his trumpet and his voice for television commercials and
TV theme songs for programs including "20/20" and CNN broadcasts.
In addition to his performing and recording career, he is artistic director
for the Columbus Jazz Orchestra.
