Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra

03.18.10 - Philharmonic Flutist, Harpist to be Featured in Saturday's Concert Print E-mail

EVANSVILLE - The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra will showcase a pair of familiar faces at The Victory on Saturday, but in better light and sharper focus than usual.

Kelly Sulick, the orchestra's principal flutist, and Megan Stout, the philharmonic's harpist, will take the center stage spot to perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp.

This will be the first time in 14 years the orchestra has played the piece, and a premiere performance for Stout and Sulick, each in their second year as principal players with the orchestra.

Stout, who played with the orchestra as a substitute while a student at Indiana University, now lives in St. Louis, where she plays with the St. Louis Symphony.

She's known the concerto, one of the major pieces in the harp repertoire, but neither musician has played it before with a live orchestra.

Before rehearsals this week, Stout met privately to work on the piece with Sulick, who teaches at the University of Evansville as a member of the orchestra's consortium, and they've consulted one another via phone and e-mails in the interim.

Stout said she looks forward to letting her concert harp ring with Sulick's flute from the front of the stage, instead of their usual spots back with the orchestra.

"I'm just going to try to keep it as clear and clean as possible," she said.

The concerto gets top billing on a concert that will include the Overture to Johann Strauss Jr.'s "Die Fledermaus" and Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5.
